Microsoft IIS 10 SSL Certificate Installation Instructions
Generating a SSL Certificate in Microsoft IIS 10
1. First, begin by opening the ZIP file which contains your Certificate. Then save the file named your_domain_name.cer
to your desktop of the server in which you are securing.
2. Click on and then Open the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager which can be accessed from the Windows Start Menu.
3. Next, in the "Connections" Menu: Click on the Server Name.
4. Double-Click on the "Server Certificates" button which is located in the IIS Section in the Center Menu.
5. Next, click on the menu titled, "Actions" which is located to the Right of the Screen.
Then Click on the Action titled, "Complete Certificate Request" By clicking on this action, the Complete Certificate
Request Wizard will launch.
6. The "Complete Certificate Request" Wizard has now launched. On the "Specify Certificate Authority Response Page
complete the following and click Next: Browse the file name you have saved in the format your_domain_name.cer.
This will have been provided to you. At this point you will then be asked to enter a "friendly name" for the file.
It is NOT part of the actual certificate, but it helps the Server Administrator easily identify the Certificate.
In the "Select a Certificate Store for the New Certificate" drop down box select "Web Hosting."
7. Now that the SSL Certificate has been installed to the server, it will be appropriate to assign the certificate
to the website using IIS.
8. Next, from the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager window, click on the Connections menu and expand
the name of the Server that the certificate was installed. Click on "Sites" and then select the site in which you wish
to use the SSL Certificate to secure.
9. Next, on the right of the screen will be a menu titled, "Actions" under that menu click on Edit Site and
then the selection "Bindings."
10. After you have selected "Bindings" a new window will open titled, "Site Bindings." Click Add.
11. After selecting the "Add" option in the Add Site Binding Window fill in the following information: under "Type"
select https. Under IP Address, you must select the IP address of the specific site in which you are using or select
"All Unassigned." The port blank box, in which the traffic will be secured by SSL is 443 in most cases.
The SSL Certificate drop-down select the SSL certificate which is your domain name in the URL format. Then Click OK.
12. The SSL Certificate has now been completely installed and the website has been programmed to accept Secure Connections.
Installing and Configuring your SSL Certificate on Microsoft IIS 8 and
Microsoft IIS 8.5 (Using Multiple Certificates Using SNI).
1. First, begin by opening the ZIP file which contains your Certificate. Then save the file named your_domain_name.cer
to your desktop of the server in which you are securing.
2. Click on and then Open the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager which can be accessed from the Start Menu.
3. Next, From the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, under the Connections Menu and then Click on the Server Name.
4. Double-Click on the "Server Certificates" button which is located in the IIS Section in the Center Menu on the Home Page.
5. Next, on the Server Certificates Page, Click on the menu titled, "Actions" which is located to the Right of the Screen.
Then Click on the Action titled, "Complete Certificate Request" By clicking on this action, the Complete Certificate
Request Wizard will launch.
6. Next, on the "Complete Certificate Request Wizard" on the Specify Certificate Authority Response Page enter the
following information: First, Browse your_domain_name.cer file that was provided and enter a "friendly name" in the box
labeled friendly name. The Friendly Name is NOT part of the actual certificate, but it is used by the Administrator to
easily identify the Certificate. In the "Select a Certificate Store for the New Certificate" box choose Web Hosting
Certificate Store.
7. After the SSL certificate has been successfully installed to the server, this is the time which you will need to
assign that certificate to the website using IIS.
8. Next, from the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager window, click on the Connections menu and select the
server name where the certificate was installed. Then expand the "Sites" option and click on the site in which you wish the
SSL Certificate to secure.
9. Next, on the right of the screen will be a menu titled, "Actions" under that menu Edit Site, click on the selection
"Bindings." After you have selected "Bindings" a new window will open titled, "Site Bindings."
10. When the window titled, "Site Bindings" has been opened, click on "Add" which is located to the right of the screen.
11. After selecting the "Add Site Bindings" option, under "Type" select https. Under IP Address, you must select the IP
address of the specific site in which you are using or select "All Unassigned." The port blank box, in which the traffic
will be secured by SSL is 443 in most cases. The SSL Certificate blank should already indicate that the certificate has been
installed. Click OK.
12. The SSL Certificate has now been completely installed and the website has been programmed to accept Secure Connections.
Install Additional SSL Certificates.
1. The server in which the CSR was created, save the SSL Certificate: your_domain_com.cer that was received.
2. Next, access the Windows Start menu and Open the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
3. After Opening the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, click on Connections Menu and then click on the Server Name.
4. Double-Click on the Server Certificates, which can be accessed on the Home Page of the IIS Section
5. In the Actions Menu (located on the Right) on the Server Certificates Page, click on the command "Complete Certificate
Request."
6. On the Complete Certificate Request Wizard, under the "Specify Certificate Authority Response page" answer the following:
Under File Name Containing the Certificate Authority's Response click and Browse the select the .cer file.
Then under Friendly Name, create a "Friendly Name" so that the Administrator will be able to identify the Certificate.
It is NOT part of the actual certificate but rather a way in which to identify it. Under "Select a certificate store for
the new certificate" select from the drop down list "Web Hosting." Click OK.
7. The SSL Certificate has now been successfully installed and it must be assigned to the appropriate site.
8. Under the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, click on the Connections Menu and expand the Server in
which the certificate was installed. Expand "Sites" and click on the individual site in which you wish to use the SSL
Certificate to secure.
9. Click on the Home Page, and select the "Actions" menu. Under "Edit Site" Click on "Bindings."
10. Under "Site Bindings" click the Add button.
11. In the "Add Site Bindings" page Place the following information within the drop-down lists and boxes:
In the box titled, "Type" select https. In the box titled, IP Address, make sure that you use the IP address
of the site or select "All Unassigned." In the box titled, "Port" in which the traffic will be secured by the
SSL choose 443. In the box titled, "Host Name" enter the host name that you are securing and check the box that states
"Require Server Name Indication." This step is required for all additional sites OTHER than the Primary Site.
The "SSL Certificate" box is where you should select the additional SSL Certificate.
12. You have successfully installed the SSL Certificate and programmed the website to accept secure connections.
