SSL Guide

SSL (Secured Sockets Layer) is a technology used to create encrypted connections between Internet web browsers and web pages. When SSL is implemented data files ,SSL certificates , are created that contain encrypted information that identifies a company’s domain name, server name and location. Once encrypted the data that is transmitted, between a browser and a server is protected.

This is How They Work

When a browser or a server with an SSL certificate tries to connect to a webserver a request for identification is transmitted. The webserver transmits a copy of its SSL certificate to the browser or server. Then the browser or server verifies the validity of the webserver’s SSL certificate. The browser or server sends a message to the web server if a positive validation is received. Then a connection with encrypted data is created and shared between the browser and or server and the webserver.

A green padlock appears on screen in a browser once a successful SSL connection is made indicating that data transmitted between the two is protected. Today in many web browsers, websites that do not have a SSL certificate, will have “Not Secure’ displayed in its URL bar.

For OV certs, the Cerificate Authority will verify the organization legal name that is attempting to get the certificate. The organization’s name is also listed in the certificate, giving added trust that both the website and the company are reputable. OV certificates are used by legally registered entities that want to provide an extra layer of confidence to their site visitors..

Domain Validated SSL
